Calgary Radon Testing & Mitigation

RADON GAS… WHAT IS IT? – HOW DOES IT HARM YOU?

Radon gas is naturally occurring, odorless and radioactive. Radon gas is a decay product of Uranium. Uranium is found throughout Canada. Uranium was displaced by glacier activity and is virtually everywhere. Uranium breaks down and turns into radium and radium breaks down and turns into RADON.  Radon decays and produces Alpha Particles. These alpha particles are now Polonium and this is what causes lung cancer (Po–218 and Po-214).

Radon is measured in units called Becquerel’s, named after Henri Becquerel who discovered radio activity in 1886. This is a unit for radioactivity (1 bq = 1 decay / second). Radon gas wants to move from high concentration to a low concentration. Gas migrates into your house from the soil beneath. Thermal stack effect is the main movement of Radon into a house. This is when heat rises. In the heating season the effect is much stronger.

Average Bq/m3 in Canada (Exposure Levels)

INSIDE HOMES                                                         43    Bq /m3

OUTSIDE AIR                                                              10    Bq/m3

6.9% of homes are <                                                   200 Bq/m3

Set limits for different Jurisdictions maximum exposure

CANADA                                                                       200 Bq /m3

UNITED STATES                                                         148 Bq/ m3

World Health Organization                                       100 Bq/m3

  • There is no safe level (the lower the better)
  • 3,200 Canadian died last year due to Radon caused lung cancer
  • Statistics from Health Canada

Health Canada conducted an intensive survey and found that 6.9% of all Canadian Homes contained levels of 200 Bq/m3 or higher. This is the recommended maximum exposure of radon gas in Canada.

TESTING

Why do we test for exposure levels?

HEALTH:

Abalon tests to find out what the levels in your home are to determine if mitigation is necessary (if the levels are too high) your chance of getting lung cancer increase.

GEOGRAPHY

Southern Alberta levels are amongst the highest in the entire country. This is due to the rocky- mountains being the edge of the glacier displacement.

TESTING

  • Who should you get to conduct the test?
  • Have your home tested only by a Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP)
  • Abalon is a C-NRPP trained & certified measurement provider.
  • Canada has different rules and application in regards to testing and mitigation.
  • Insist on proof of C-NRPP certification, Health Canada recommends the same

DURATION OF TEST

  • Abalon is a C-NRPP member and we recommend a 91-day test
  • Health Canada recommends a 91-day test. Optimum Oct.-April winter (heating season)
  • 2-7 day test is only good for
    • Post-mitigation level confirmation
    • Real state (exposure presence)
    • The homeowner, just to let you know you what the radon levels are at the time of testing.
  • Long-term test is a more accurate method as it gives you a realistic average exposure. A short-term test may be done when exposures are low and may give you readings that are not representative of actual annual averages.

PLACEMENT OF TEST DEVICE

  • A trained measurement professional will place where it is most effective. Training allows the professional to know the optimal placement.
  • Abalon is C-NRPP member
  • You should always test in the lowest livable space where you spend 4 hours or more in a day.
  • Call Abalon to set up your radon test. We have the expertise and the training to give you the most accurate test available.

MITIGATION

  • Abalon can reduce the radon gas that enters your living space.
  • Abalon is a C-NRPP trained and certified mitigation provider. Health Canada recommends only a C-NRPP trained and certified mitigation provider conduct your mitigation

HOW DO YOU CONDUCT A PROPER MITIGATION

(Based on average Canadian home with basement concrete floor)

  • Measure pressure under the slab. This will tell you if you have good connectivity under the concrete floor
  • Measuring will help you find the optimal place for your ventilation system.
  • Once you found your fan location test to indicate the amount of air movement required to maintain negative pressure under the slab.
  • Pressure testing and velocity test are very important. Not conducting these tests properly can have fatal consequences.
  • If a fan is installed without actually testing you could have a fan that is too weak and will have no effect in radon reduction, or if you have a fan that is too strong this can cause back drafting. A deadly entry of carbon monoxide can occur.
  • If your mitigator does not perform these test – YOU ARE AT RISK
  • Be aware of electrically charged filters. These filters may reduce radon but produce ozone. These filters are not recommended by Health Canada
